Quality is about substance, and health is about more than substitutions.
We believe that the more unprocessed, simple, and close to nature a food can be made, the better for both taste and body. Humanity has baked bread for thousands of years from a handful of simple, minimally processed ingredients.
Jesus did not give the disciples loaves of "Refined Enriched Bleached White Flour," "Vegetable Monoglycerides," and "Azodicarbonamide;" simple ground wheat, water, and oil were enough all the way through the 1900s.
Today, mass production and the drive for longer shelf lives (i.e. higher profits) has lead to most "food" being stripped of nutrition and replaced with chemicals, preservatives, and fillers, contributing to epidemics of diabetes, nutritional deficiency, tooth decay, and more.
Asher Breads uses no preservatives, no added chemicals, and strives to source high quality, fresh natural ingredients from other local small businesses where possible. We use only whole grain wheat because that's what wheat is - a high fiber, high protein grain, ground up and used to make bread. We don't believe in removing the parts with nutrition and calling it "refining," nor adding chemicals to replace what was taken.
Food wasn't broken until people started trying to fix it.
We cook from scratch for the same reason we choose locally grown produce over store-bought wherever possible: the difference in quality is obvious. We mix and chop and knead by hand in small artisan batches because real ingredients deserve to be handled by real hands.

We offer delivery because we know how hard it is to fit healthy, preservative-free cooking into busy schedules. Yet with a shelf life of just a few days to a week, it's even harder to find in stores or restaurants. And if you've got a special need or ingredient allergy it can seem impossible!

How to start a bakery: step one
Asher Breads began in summer of 2022 after a broken right hand inspired an unexpected change of pace. After nearly 20 years volunteering and working for others in the restaurant industry, all income was suddenly replaced with medical bills.
With no one hiring 'off-hand' help, a new small business was soon born thanks to Illinois' new cottage food law!
